On the project site once stood Hotel Tozankaku, a long-established Kyoto hotel that had welcomed school-trip students for many decades. The hotel was aging and experiencing other problems. Our group was fortunate enough to acquire the land and take on the investment and development, attracting the "Six Senses" hotel brand, which was the first of its kind in Japan.
Looking back on the history of the Higashiyama area where the hotel is located, this was the site of Rokuhara, the base of the Taira clan, which was the most influential clan in Kyoto in the 12th century. At that time, Japan was in the midst of a period of great historical change as the political center of the country shifted from the court nobles to the warrior class, and there are many shrines and temples in the vicinity of the hotel that are steeped in the culture of the time. In order to reflect the Japanese culture, art, and history that flourished in Rokuhara, we have chosen "Miyabi," symbolizing the splendor of the Heian period, as the axis of the space design. The hotel's various locations are accented with artwork inspired by the world of "The Tale of Genji," rabbits and other animals depicted in the "Choju Jinbutsu Giga" (Scrolls of Frolicking Animals), a Japanese national treasure scroll from Kozanji Temple in Kyoto, as well as Japanese folk tales and folktales. The multiple Japanese courtyards across the hotel, with its state-of-the-art wellness facilities, offer an exceptional wellness experience that is unique to Six Senses.
Wellness, sustainability, and cultural infusion come together to create an exceptional hotel experience.
